Today a friend approached me telling me how another host has some fantastic offerings so I checked them out…
Apparently you can get 400GB diskspace, 10TB bandwidth on a shared dual-core with up to 100 other people! I thought this was incredible so naturally I spoke to one of the sales team on how they do this…
Please wait for a site operator to respond.
You are now chatting with ‘julia.r’
julia.r: hold on please
julia.r: Welcome to WebHostingBuzz live chat support. What can I do for you?
dan: I am looking at your web hosting packages, how are you able to offer 400GB diskspace and 10TB of transfer for just £2.49?
julia.r: the thing is that this is a budget plan and it is hosted on a shared server
julia.r: usually there are up to 100 clients are hosted on one shared server
julia.r: also though this plan offers you high disk quota and traffic
julia.r: you will not be able to use it as file storage according to our policy
julia.r: on all budget plans streaming is not allowed
dan: So basically your offering something no one can actually use.
julia.r: that’s why the price is not high
julia.r: no, you understood me in a wrong way
julia.r: let me explain
dan: The only possible way a user can utilise 400GB of diskspace and 10TB of transfer if if they have a very popular and very large website. Firstly the server can’t handle a popular site, because as you said its a shared server with only dual core and up to 100 other users.
dan: No to mention that it would be damn hard to push 10TB to 1 account on a server with 100 other users on probably a 100Mbit or at most 1Gbit connection.
julia.r: you see, this plan is designed for hosting small and not heavy sites.
dan: So, you are offering a large amount of resources when it is impossible to use those resources?…
julia.r: why the site hosted on a shared server cannot be popular ?
dan: Well the server itself has other limitations, such as CPU and RAM.
dan: It would be very hard for a dedicated client with 1 website on the server to be able to comfortably use 10TB and 400GB without the server crashing because it couldn’t cope.
dan: Hence my point that a user trying to use the full package when coupled with other users being on the server is an impossibility.
julia.r: the thing is that 90% or more of your content on your website must be linked from an HTML or similarly coded web page where all content is freely available to the public
dan: So if a user was to put up a website, which hosted 100’s of thousands of images, all of them high res and each one could be viewed via the website, and the website got even 1000 hits a day.. Your shared package could handle that?
julia.r: you are absolutely right. the server resources are not limited that’s why we have certain limits for websites hosted on a shared servers. Please have a look:http://www.webhostingbuzz.co.uk/acceptable-use-policy.php
dan: Right ok, but you see this brings me back to the point about it being impossible for a user to actually use the resources you are offering… So you are grossly overselling something which you can not realisticly provide.
julia.r: i disk space and bandwidth are not the only features a client should consider choosing a hosting plan for his/her site
julia.r: it is necessary to take into account how many server resources it will take
julia.r: it depends on what applications a client are going to host
julia.r: some scripts are very heavy and they consume to much CPU
julia.r: as for the price
julia.r: market conditions are changing all the time, competition can become more fierce and as a result the company needs to stay competitive
julia.r: I cannot tell you why the price is so because management staff set the prices for the products not the support team
dan: Ok, thanks a lot.
julia.r: Also the financial situation in the company is improving so we can afford to decrease the price and as a result to attract more customers
julia.r: you are welcome
I have to admit it is fun hearing some of the excuses, but at the same time very worrying… It’s simple. Don’t offer what you can not reasonably reply. To do so is lying… and who can trust a liar?
Don’t trust ’em, don’t deal with them. As they say “if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.”
The host in question here is Webhostingbuzz.co.uk overselling to eye watering amounts…

The person you were talking with really doesn’t understand computing!
Even if they only had 10 clients using that server, and all of them used the maximum limitations that their policy allows them to the server would fall over so fast it would think it had been in the ring with Mike Tyson.
This company could really get their asses sued. Its almost tempting to pay out that amount of money just to watch it fall over and then sue them for not providing their end of the deal. Could be some really good money to be had from them.
Amazing, not only do they offer a really unusable service, they also deceive about their hosting location and when you raise the issue they will suspend your account until you promise not to take legal action… amazing… Matt Russell the CEO has no idea how to deal with a customer.
I take it you are a former client of theirs…
Just checked them out again, wow now their are offering 1250GB disk and 20TB for £2.49!… Absolute madness. Most servers don’t allow more than 4TBish Traffic plans!
